Why compounds cannot be separated by chromatography? How can they be seperated then?

Also, what is the difference between distillation and fractional distillation? Some websites say ethanol can be separated from water by distillation others say fractional distillation. Fractional disitllation for liquid-liquid, gas-gas and anymore? and simple distillation for liqui-solid and anymore? Thks a lot!
