Aren't people sensitive of others feelings anymore? My friend's son died from a tragic?

Probably the reason their doing that is just simple curuosity. Im sure they don't intentionally bring it up to hurt the woman but yes i do agree with you, they should'nt just come up to her and ask her as if they were talking about the weather. I hope she heals over the loss of her son though. Best wishes!
