What Happens to a person during a Mental Breakdown? or What are its synonyms?

I'm writing a story and one of the characters goes through mental breakdowns...but thought i searched wikipedia it didnt give me the info i needed which is...What happens to the person during a mental breakdown? As in do they start screaming or something? are they similar to panic attacks or hysteria fits?
