Does anyone ever actually walk around with GPS devices?

Manufacturers are always keen to promote navigation use on foot, particularly pda devices and recent tablets but does anyone actually walk around with navigation devices? Personally I'd feel self conscious, a little worried about theft. Some of the areas in my location are pretty rough, walking around with gps is like an open invitation. Do you use yours on foot openly, if so, do you live in a city / town ?
